9/12 Candidate: Senator Bob Smith
I am pleased to announce our First 9/12 Candidate to sign the contract for Florida!
Former NH Senator, Bob Smith, is running for U.S Senate in the state of Florida, for the Republican nomination and to replace the vacant seat left by Mel Martinez. Senator Smith brings to the table 18 years of experience in Congress, and states he can “hit the ground running” and wont need to be “brought up to speed” on the issues.
Senator Smith is a husband of 42 years to his wife Mary Jo, and has three children, Jennifer, Bobby and Jason. He is a Navy Veteran, and served aboard the USS Navasota in Vietnam. He was a High and Jr. High school History and English teacher and coached Varsity baseball and Football.
His political career began in 1985 to 1990 as U.S Congressman in New Hampshire’s First District, where he was on the Veterans Affairs, and Science & technology committee’s. In 1990 he decided to run for U.S Senate, to replace Gordon Humphrey, who was retiring at the time. He served in senate until 2003, when he was defeated by John Sununu. He attempted a run for President in 2000, however soon dropped out and endorsed George W. Bush. When Bush was up for reelection in 2003, Senator Smith chose not to endorse Bush a second time, and endorsed John Kerry. When I asked him why he would endorse a “political enemy” he answered that it was common practice of a President to endorse Incumbents for reelection in their own party, and Bush’s administration promised an endorsement in 2003 to Smith, however when it came time to do so, refused to endorse him, and the same for Katherine Harris in Florida, who was up for reelection. Senator Smith attributes this lack of support from the President, as the main reason for losing the senate race in 2003. The Senator thinks that loyalty, honesty and respect of your peers is what is needed to maintain a healthy political party, and at the time, Bush showed none of these qualities to the existing incumbents.
Since 2003, Senator Smith has been living in Florida, where he was the president of the Everglades Foundation from 2004-2007, he is also the founding director of First America Bank in Sarasota. He has other experience as a real estate broker as well.
When asked why he wants to run for Senate, he stated the following in an email to me:
“I have been watching with much dismay over these past several months as our country continues to veer away from the free market and far to the left on economic, defense, foreign, domestic and social policy. Making matters worse, the Republican Party appears demoralized, confused and leaderless. America and our party have lost their compass. I have agonized as to whether to re-enter national politics. I have sought and received advice from family, friends and voters. After weighing all information very carefully, I have concluded that I can no longer “sit on the sidelines” in this fight for the soul of America. I believe that I still have much to offer my country. I have made the decision to run for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate in the 2010 primary here in Florida. I have served in Congress for eighteen years and I can hit the ground running. I will not need to “get up to speed” on the issues. I am a proven conservative leader with a record of accomplishment. I will fight for the conservative soul of our party and our country. If you will help me get this message out to the voters of Florida, I can win. We will be the beacon in the fight to lead America back! I am prepared to give it everything I have, but I cannot do it without your help.”
“It’s time for Republicans to start acting like Republicans again!”
Senator Smith, we salute and thank you for your service, and wish you luck in the campaign!

Senator Smith is a true conservative and Florida needs him in the senate. He is an honorable man who has the experience to get things done. Let's get the word out about Sen. Bob Smith.

I'm not so sure about Sen. Smith…endorsing John Kerry because of a "political game"…seems to be the same political machine stuff we are so trying to get out of office.

That may be true, but we don't know his sincerity yet. That's why it's good to have a primary process. He's been out of politics for a while and maybe he's got a clearer head about him. Let's wait and see.
Besides, this actually seems to help me want him in office. He's already broken with party lines once–that tells me his loyalty is to something beyond the party. Now that he's signed, we know his loyalty is to these principles and values.
Let's see how it sticks.

Smith may be a Republican now, but what will he be tomorrow? In 1999 he ran against Bush. His candidacy did not pick up much ground which means he wasn't that impressive in the first place. He decided to leave the Republican Party and seek a nomination with the U. S. Taxpayers Party. One month later he swore off the Taxpayer Party and decided he was an Independent. His candidacy went nowhere so he withdrew and backed Bush. Then Senator Chaffee died and Smith recanted his repudiation of the Republican Party and was stupidly appointed to Senator Chaffee's position on the Committee on Enviroment and Public Works. In 2002 Smith was defeated by Sununu and denied re-nomination. After that he decided he would sell real estate in Florida. How many times will he change his mind if he is elected? He don't even know. If you doubt any of these statements, look it up. I'm from Florida and I care, Marco Rubio for Senate

Sorry but that explanation of endorsing John Kerry made my head spin. Actions speak louder than words.

Actions do speak louder than words. Imagine a President of your same political party reneging on his word, what would you have done? Look at his voting history as a US Senator and as a Congressman. Yes, his actions do positively speak well. If you are fiscally conservative, believe in less federal government intrusion, want your Constitution enforced and respected check out Senator Bob Smith. BTW He would enter as a Senior Senator unlike Crist or Rubio you would both be Junior Senators.

He sent a letter to John Kerry because Bush was supposed to campaign on Smith's behalf and went back on his word. The whole thing is explained on Bob Smiths website. http://www.bobsmithussenate.com
